Install
DGen Studio is one program. There is no installer, no Bun, no Node and nothing else to set up.
1. Get Genesis 9 Starter Essentials (free)
Get Genesis 9 Starter Essentials, free from Daz, and install it with Daz Install Manager or Daz Central as usual. It is the one Daz product DGen requires. If you already use Genesis 9 in Daz Studio, you have it.
2. Download DGen Studio, unzip it, run it
Read on for your system: Windows, Mac or Linux.
What you need
| You need | |
|---|---|
| A computer | Windows (64 bit), a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or later), or Linux (64 bit, x64). |
| A graphics card | One that your browser can use with WebGPU. A recent dedicated card gives the smoothest flesh; a laptop's built in graphics work, at a lower resolution. |
| A browser | A current Chrome or Edge. The studio needs WebGPU, and these have it. |
| Daz content | Daz Studio's free Genesis 9 Starter Essentials, installed in your Daz library. It is the one thing DGen requires. |
| Disk space | About 130 MB for the program, and room for its cache (20 GB at most by default, you can change it). |
Download
As a beta tester you get a message with one download link for each system and the password of the zip. The links stop working after 7 days: ask for new ones if they did.
- Windows:
dgen-<version>-windows-x64.zip - Mac:
dgen-<version>-darwin-arm64.zip - Linux:
dgen-<version>-linux-x64.zip
Each zip holds the program (dgen.exe on Windows, dgen elsewhere), a README.txt and a CREDITS.txt.
Windows
- Unzip the zip with its password. Windows Explorer asks for it when you open the zip.
- Put the folder where you like, for example in your Documents.
- Double click
dgen.exe. - The first time, Windows SmartScreen may say "Windows protected your PC": the program is not signed yet. Click More info, then Run anyway.
- A console window opens and your browser opens the studio. Keep the console window open while you use DGen: closing it stops DGen.
Mac (Apple Silicon)
- Unzip the zip with its password (double click it, macOS asks for the password).
- Open Terminal in that folder: open the Terminal app, type
cd(with a space), drag the folder onto the Terminal window and press Enter. - Type
./dgenand press Enter. - The first time, macOS may block it because the program is not signed yet. Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway next to the message about
dgen. Run./dgenagain and confirm. - Your browser opens the studio. Keep the Terminal window open while you use DGen: press Ctrl C there to stop it.
Linux
- Unzip the zip with its password:
unzip dgen-<version>-linux-x64.zip. - In that folder, run
./dgen. If the system says permission denied, runchmod +x dgenonce. - Your browser opens the studio. Press Ctrl C in the terminal to stop DGen.
DGen reads your Daz library whatever the case of its folder and file names, as Daz does, so a library copied from Windows works on a Linux disk.
Check WebGPU
Open chrome://gpu (or edge://gpu) and look for WebGPU: Hardware accelerated. If it says disabled or unavailable, update the browser and your graphics driver. See Troubleshooting for more.
Next
The studio opens on its config popup the first time: go on to First run and the config.
Updating later
From version 1.32.11, DGen updates itself with one click: see Updates. If you run 1.32.11 or older, download the latest zip by hand once more; every version after that updates itself.
Uninstall
Delete the program's folder. Then delete your DGen folder (.dgen in your home folder, see Profiles) if you want your settings, presets and cache gone too. DGen writes nothing else on your computer and never touches your Daz library.
